The Arteri quarter in Tallinn — 4,447 RGB luminaires, or six kilometres of dynamic façade light

The Arteri quarter is a business quarter in central Tallinn. Its three buildings — the 9-storey building C, the 15-storey office building B and the 28-storey office building A — are joined by an atrium and a car park; the gross area totals 77,220 m². The nearly zero-energy buildings are designed to the high Excellent level of the BREEAM standard.

Halored had the privilege of designing the façade lighting for all three buildings together with our partner Luminec. The façades carry 4,447 RGB luminaires and the total length of the lines of light is roughly six kilometres.

The geometry of the façade is what made the project unusual: every luminaire sits on a louvre facing a different direction and is therefore essentially unique. Halored’s scope covered the design of the luminaires and equipping them with the technology — to make it possible to manufacture thousands of luminaires each facing a different way, Halored developed the entire design technology. Luminec carried the demanding role of manufacturing and installing the luminaires and of the electrical work inside the buildings.

The diffusers of the luminaires are black so that they stay unnoticed between the louvres by day and do not disturb the architecture. Once darkness falls, those same luminaires draw the façade clearly — architecture by day, light by night.

The façades are run by e:cue SYMPHOLIGHT lighting control, with DMX as the luminaire control protocol, which allows all three buildings to be driven from a single system as one whole — from a calm everyday look to dynamic scenes for events.

The result is façade lighting that gives the Arteri quarter a clearly felt presence in the evening cityscape.
