Avalon Plaza

Avalon Plaza in Tallinn – layered façade lighting at the gateway to the city centre

Avalon Plaza stands on Tartu mnt, one of Tallinn's main entry routes, linking the airport with the Old Town. The building is set to become a new city-centre landmark, and its lighting is designed so that it reads clearly both from a passing car and from the pavement.

The lighting design was created by Aether, an independent architectural lighting design studio, together with the building's architects. Halored had the privilege of developing the technical solution based on the design and supplying it – from the luminaires to the lighting control.

The light is concealed in the façade surfaces and architectural articulations, so it is the building's form and relief that stand out, not the luminaires. Much of the façade carries a hexagonal pattern traced by slender lines of light. Beneath the projecting balconies, warm light sets a quiet rhythm, while backlit vertical columns add a cool layer that contrasts with the warm tones. In the open atrium, a gobo projection plays with colour and light.

The solution follows Aether's principle that light is the fourth dimension of architecture: it supports spatial perception and human well-being, is energy-efficient and adds no unnecessary light pollution to the city.

The luminaires come from quality manufacturers. Linealuce, iPro and Laser Blade by the Italian brand iGuzzini, together with BOXSIDE XS LED modules from Inventronics, deliver precise, even light outdoors all year round; the atrium projection is created by a Rosco X-Effects projector.

All the layers of light are controlled by e:cue SYMPHOLIGHT lighting control. A single system lets the light be scheduled and scenes changed – from a calm everyday evening look to a festive holiday mood.

The result is façade lighting that gives Avalon Plaza a clear and dignified presence in the evening cityscape while remaining restrained.
